My book review of “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child | Part One and Part Two” written by J.K. Rowling, John Tiffany and Jack Thorne

In my view…

This story is about the life of Harry Potter and his friends, 19 years after he has defeated Voldemort and escaped death. This part starts where the film of the seventh sequel ended. London’s King Cross train station. A lot of things happen in this sequel and definitely clears up a few questions you could have had after reading the first seven books. This book is also genius written in a psychological way. There is more dialogue and you get a better view of the thoughts of the different characters. You get the feeling you get to know them better. Even after seven Harry Potter books, this one can not be ignored. This book answers some questions you probably had and some questions you probably never wandered about.

Writing style / spelling

I have read the Dutch version, which is translated from English by Wiebe Buddingh’, and I really love the style of writing. It is a script form because it is a play, a theater production. But you recognise the same style in this 8th Harry Potter sequel as the previous sequels of Harry Potter which I have read in Dutch as well. I have read the first Harry Potter in English too and the second a bit in German. What is different mostly are the names of the characters. The names of the friends of Harry Potter, the teachers, the families, the enemies and so on. But this is not disturbing because it all fits well together for the Dutch version at least! So a really good translation job from Wiebe Buddingh’ throughout all the Harry Potter sequels in Dutch. I have read the book within three days and I like the pace of the story.

Main characters

This part is the hardest part to tell. Because Harry Potter, Ginny Potter (Weasley), Ron Weasley, Hermione Weasley (Granger) and Draco Malfoy are all back in this sequel. 19 Years later and a lot is going on. People come and go in the life of Harry Potter, people stay close or are torn apart of him. All this that we are used to that happens in the previous seven sequels, happens in this sequel too! Not exactly of course, but you recognise the flow of the book. You remember the previous sequels and their stories, you imagine the characters how they were and for some how they are now 19 years later. Even some plot twists of the other books are mentioned. How did J.K. Rowling think about writing it in such a genius way? Brilliant!

I hope you like the book too. It is worth to read it! I am not telling about the story too much– never do in my book reviews – you have to read the book yourself and make your own opinion.

Have you seen the theater play of this Harry Potter sequel?

Rotterdam shows solidarity with the Union Jack

The terrible attack yesterday at Westminster, London. It has taken lives and many people are injured, some still critical. But it did not tear apart the strength of the love of people for each other. To help anywhere they can.

Rotterdam shows its solidarity for the victims and the braves and the helping, with the Union Jack for one day half-mast at the town hall.

And the sun was shining today. A new day, because life goes on, everybody united and not ripped apart by terror.

YouTube | Lindsey Stirling – Beauty and The Beast

Today I discovered this beautiful music video on YouTube from Lindsey Stirling.

The new film of Beauty and The Beast with Emma Watson as Belle and Dan Stevens as The Beast, had its première the 23rd of February in London.

It will be further released in cinemas on March 16, 2017 (Eastern Europe), March 17, 2017 (other parts of the world and USA), and in The Netherlands on March 29, 2017.

Why is it released so late in The Netherlands, or is it because of the translation…I don’t know…does not happen that often such a day difference. In Belgium it will be released on March 22, 2017.

Lindsey Stirling is a multi skilled artist: violinist, dancer, performance artist. She combines choreography with playing the violin.

And she is the upcoming weeks in Europe! (one mentioned per country, sometimes more events in a country; check it here)

Restless (2012)

In my view…

The story is about a woman who is living her normal life in 1975. Thirty years after the end of World War II. Her mother is now and then a bit anxious and was until recently dependent on a wheelchair. The film is written with long flashbacks. Stories told from the mother to her daughter. And the daughter – Ruth – who is doing a research to the World War II and the role of some persons and secret services. The mother, who’s real name is not Mrs. Gilmartin but Eva Delectorskaya – has written everything down for her daughter so she can investigate what happened over 30 years ago and why her mother’s life might be still in danger.

I skip writing about the middle part because this would lead to factual spoilers. Some facts have not a lot to do with the characters or with predicting the story of the film, but give a little imagination of the settings in which the story of this film is written.

At a certain moment towards the end I found the flashbacks more confusing and they switched more quickly. But this was also important because it speeded it up a little bit and also held the tension of the film viewer close to the story.

The end – description of feelings – no facts spoiling

The end is in my opinion surprising, I did not expect that concluding end of the film. I predicted the end differently, way differently. But I did not exactly know what to expect either. The current time of the film – 1975  – was quite clear and in an average pace. But the end of the part of the flashbacks, was the part that was really surprising. Not only the end but in fact the whole part. You are constantly questioning yourself: what is yet to come?

But again, I did not expect that ending and the quickness the whole clue is being explained. So simply explained, so short, so genius. It felt like all the puzzle pieces of all characters and happenings fell into place.

The film has a sad end. And I don’t like it when people die or really good actors and actresses play an important role and one of the characters they play die. According to the story it had to be and I understand. And for the other main character, this leads to a happy end. So the film has a happy end as well.

The Writing

To write a screenplay like this – with such extremities in happy and sad, beloved and betrayed, well-kept secrets and conspiracies – is a skill not many people possesses as far as I have seen and discovered.

The Cast

This film has been made by a wonderful cast full of great British actors and actresses. Rufus Sewell who plays now and then the sweet guy and now and then the bad guy. Great actor for his role! And Michelle Dockery who is also known for her role in Downton Abbey, plays a sweet kind smart woman who knows how to stand her ground. Charlotte Rampling is the best known actress of this film. With her filmography of over 120 roles! And you will see her five! times this year in the cinemas. And of course the good lord of the Harry Potter films – after late Richard Harris – Michael Gambon! Also names that are coming up such as Alexander Fehling and Tom Brooke

Trailer:

I am not telling too much about the story – you have to see the film yourself and make your own opinion. I hope you like the film too. It is worth to watch it times and if you did not figure out the story completely, it is worth to watch it multiple times.

Rotterdam European City of 2015

In november 2014 was the Urbanism Awards ceremony and Rotterdam won the top prize! The International Academy of Urbanism in London organises this event every year and they named Rotterdam as Europe’s best city of 2015! The Academy of Urbanism want to help promote places and learn from them. Chairman of the Academy Steven Bee said about Rotterdam:

“The City has a predominantly young, open, tolerant community that is embracing innovative architecture and urban design and new business models. Its strategy is to attract families and businesses to the central area with a variety of housing, excellent public transport and a lively public realm.” “A long-term perspective, a high level of autonomy, strong leadership by the mayor and municipality, and strong partnerships between public and private sector, are all helping Rotterdam grow positively.”

These words of Bee summary how you can describe Rotterdam over the past couple of years. Although there has been a financial crises, a cultural cut in subsidies and raising unemployment (by then), Rotterdam is doing well. And I as a student living in Rotterdam see things happen, little changes. Sometimes companies are suddenly gone, festivals bounding their strength together to survive but Rotterdam is also growing. Especially you see it on the long-term project like the Markthal which opened on the 1st of october last year. It is a very famous architectural building and the first market hall of The Netherlands. It reminds me of the market hall next to the Ramblas in Barcelona, Spain.

Rotterdam has also some beautiful videos, one of them is of the plans of the Markthal, before it was finished by Provast Markthal Rotterdam, this film is made in march 2014 by PlusNewMedia
